Faria Spelling Bee is held for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students only. Scripps Spelling Bee lists and processes are used here.  Feef volunteers will officially proctor this Spelling Bee, and the Oral rounds will be run by our Faria teacher's team.

The top scoring 30 students in the written round advance to Faria’s Annual Spelling Bee Oral Round. All Faria students and families are welcome.

Eligibility Criteria

Only Grades 3 - 5 can participate.

To be eligible for the Spelling Bee, students must maintain at least a 97% average spelling score until the Spelling Bee season is over, so keep up your good work with your weekly spelling.

When?

Written round for students will be held on November 8th in the GLC after school at 3:15 P.M

The top 30 finalists from that round participate in an oral round on December 13th in the GLC at 3:15 P.M.

Study Help?

Students can obtain a list of words to study this year from Mr. Papoulias in Room 7.  Anyone can pick up these lists and study or help other students study.

Register:

To register for the written round, complete the following form shared on ParentSquare (ParentSquare Form), and bring a printout of the last page to Mrs. Norman in Room 23 by Friday, November 3rd.

We will follow up with your teachers regarding your spelling grades before the November 8th written test.

Good luck and have fun learning about the words on this list and more!

  • Spelling Bee is a journey, not a one-time competition. Help your child develop love for words!

  • Encourage your child to read from all genre, to introduce them to new words contextually.

  • Here are a couple of movies that you could watch with your child to inspire them about Spelling Bee:

  • Once your child completes studying the 450 words in the School Spelling Bee List, he or she could study 1150 words on Merriam Webster's Spell It: http://www.myspellit.com/

  • Once your child completes Spell It, he or she could get deeper into learning the root words from various origins such as Greek, German, Latin, Swahili, Hindi, etc. I'm attaching a pdf written by Dr. Jacques Bailly, former champion and the current official pronouncer of Scripps National Spelling Bee. I hope you'll find it useful. Also, here is a good book that could help with Spelling Bee preparation: https://www.amazon.com/Spell-Like-Champ-Barrie-Trinkle/dp/0761143696

  • And here's a brief video interview of a former Spelling Bee champion where he revealed a bit on how he studied: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQFUrNRT-9Y

Please have your child watch a few YouTube video clips of Scripps National Spelling Bee to familiarize them on the questions they can ask before they start spelling. That approach would help them in getting the spelling right.
